Douglas Tompkins, the 72-year-old founder of The North Face, died on Tuesday after suffering from severe hypothermia when his kayak capsized on a lake in southern Chile

Tompkins grew up in&nbspMillbrook, New York, and moved west when he was 17 to ski race and climbIn 1966, he founded The North Face company to make and sell outdoor equipment

The North Face company posted a tribute to Tompkins on its Facebook page once the founder's death was announced
